Surrendering Salt

I must admit, this week's blog post topic is extremely random. Therefore, I'll just state the topic right away. This week, S is for Salt. Yes, you read it right. Salt. Not Salt the movie starring Angelina Jolie. I'm referring to the salt that people use every day when they cook and eat meals.

Growing up for some reason I developed a habit of "over-salting" my food. This awful habit followed me all the way through high school and into college. Not until recently did I realize the horrible health problems that can result in my addiction to the salt shaker. How did I finally see the light? I would like to thank two of my four roommates for my epiphany to change my awful habit.

Brittanny and Katie (my two roommates) began to notice the extreme amount of salt I would put on my food. Whether it was out or concern or because they were in the mood to tease me (probably a little of both I think), they comically started looking up all of the negative health effects that salt could cause. Though I was definitely laughing as they started looking up random facts, I definitely got the message and we all decided that for Lent I should try to cut my salt addiction.

The next day I researched for myself the truth about Salt. I read countless articles. Some argued that salt may not be as bad as researchers believe, such as an article on the Huffington Post. Others, such as an article from Livestrong, argued that a high intake of sodium can result in negative health. Maybe these articles will help you decide for yourself. Even though I'm still unsure of what I think, I've decided to give up salt for Lent anyway. Wish me luck.
